The 2017 Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Open
A roaring success!
With each new edition the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival closing ceremony draws more attention and prestige. It’s here that some of the greatest minds of our time are honoured and chess history is made. Once again we are happy to share with our readers from the four corners of the world the momentous achievements of this year’s participants. Sadly the ceremony has come to a close now and we relive the most memorable moments, we hope that you'll join us in congratulating this year's winners.
Now in its 15th edition, The Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival was held at the Caleta Hotel, Catalan Bay as it has been since its inauguration in 2003. At that time, nearly half of the 59 competitors who took part were FIDE Grandmasters.
Continuing to hold the title since 2015, our winner this year was the brilliant Hikaru Nakamura who emerged victorious with the defeat of Antén Guijarro in an electrifying speed playoff. He happily accepted his prize money of £23,000 and a trophy from the Chairman and of Tradewise Insurance Company Ltd Mr James Humphreys.
The victor was followed closely by Grandmaster Ju Wenjun, currently the second-highest rated female player in the world. She enjoyed a meteoric rise on the international stage over the past three years and she now has a £15,000 prize from the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Open to show for it. Incidentally, Ju celebrated her birthday during the tournament making her award truly special.
Today, the chess tournament simply referred to by many as the Tradewise is much more than a competition. Stretching over 11 days in the months of January and February, the chess tournament is an opportunity for like-minded chess enthusiasts to meet in splendid surroundings, and for experts to hold masterclasses via live feeds for their fans.
Our legendary Battle of the Sexes event had its fifth outing this year and was live on the internet for the first time attracting thousands of viewers. Local officials dropped by during the tournament to wish our players the best of luck, and His Excellency the Governor of Gibraltar Lieutenant General Edward Davis hosted a festive dinner in their honour at the Convent. The residence is not only His Excellency's abode, but also a tourist hotspot as it is said to be haunted.
This year Tradewise bids you farewell and hopes to see you again in the following years. The next edition will be held between Jan 22nd and Feb 1st 2018, which hopes to welcome you to Gibraltar with forces anew and prizes to match. Voted the best open chess event for four years running you know it’s one not to be missed. Every insurance policy issued by Tradewise benefits from specialist insurance solutions and exclusive cover.
